Originally developed for military use and utilized by NATO soldiers, the Sordin SmartEar Impulse is ANSI IPIL certified for impulse noise up to 166 dB, providing a 33 dB reduction. In the absence of peak sounds, the earplug delivers an SNR of 19 dB, ensuring minimal occlusion effects while allowing for the perception of sounds and ambient noise.

SmartEar Impulse plugs allow air to circulate to the ear, reducing irritation in the ear canal. Additionally, they maintain sound directionality, speech intelligibility, and awareness of the surrounding environment, which are crucial for hunting scenarios in terms of safety and effectiveness.

Further information on occlusion:
The occlusion effect occurs when an ear plug or other equipment blocks the outer part of the ear canal. The problem is amplified in equipment designed to fit tightly in the ear canal, either for retention purposes or hearing protection. What happens is that the inserted device increases the acoustic "impedance" of the ear canal, which in turn enhances the amplitude of acoustic pressure, especially when low-frequency sounds are produced by the user. The phenomenon becomes more pronounced, for example, when speaking, walking, swallowing, or during increased heart rate from fast-paced activity or stairs. The most common occlusion occurs due to bone-conducted sound in the ear. Particularly low frequencies are greatly amplified, discernible to anyone who has talked or eaten with earplugs in. This results in an irritating and distracting echo-like rumble or low-frequency thudding, which can also impair concentration, cause fatigue, and ultimately affect safety and operational efficiency.
