Tulus is a handy fire-starting tool that should be kept in your gear whenever outdoors. If the matches get wet, you can always start a fire with flint. Suitable tinder includes birch bark, dry moss or lichen, dry sticks chopped into small pieces, curls made from dry wood, and paper.
When making fire with flint, arrange a sheltered place for the tinder, such as a pit in the snow or a windbreak made from clothing. If necessary, you can carefully scrape magnesium powder from the flint onto the tinder, as this helps ignition further.
By striking the flint firmly, a spark shower is produced, which should be directed right onto the tinder. Once the tinder catches fire, gradually feed it with suitable dry material to build a proper campfire.
