Outdoor Companion's Kuksa, Birch Burl Fighting Grouse
Handcrafted in Muurame, Central Finland, from valuable birch burl and strong moose antler. The tactile experience of this ecological kuksa is so exceptional that you won't want to let go of it. The kuksa features a design from birch burl depicting fighting grouse.
'Bare' kuksa requires approximately 2 hours of handcrafting. Additionally, sketching the design takes about another 2 hours.
The kuksa is an ecological alternative. It is made from wood, a renewable material that does not require detergent or hot water for cleaning. It does not conduct heat, so coffee stays hot longer and does not scald your mouth easily.
An excellent gift that every outdoor companion will surely value! A daily use item that lasts well when properly cared for.
Material: Birch burl and moose antler
Volume: approx. 200ml
Weight: approx. 230g
Please note that each handcrafted kuksa is naturally unique. If you order from the online store, every shape or grain of the wood won't be 100% identical, but the craftsmanship is very precise. You will receive a unique gift made from Finnish craftsmanship every time.
Kuksa care instructions:
1. Fill the kuksa with warm coffee water, not boiling. Let it sit for two minutes and then pour it out.
Boiling in salt water eliminates the stresses in the wood, which is why the kuksa has a salty flavor. The worst salt leeches out into hot water.
2. Allow the kuksa to dry for a couple of hours, preferably until the next day. The wood fibers expand when they dampen and dry.
3. Brew strong filtered coffee. Do not drink directly from the kuksa; instead, take a tablespoon of warm, wet coffee grounds from the filter and place it in the kuksa. Rub the grounds against the walls of the kuksa with your thumb until they dry (3-5 min.). This will create a waterproof grease layer inside your kuksa, preventing it from getting soaked and cracking as it dries. Additionally, all excess flavors remain beneath the grease layer.
Drink from the kuksa, but do not wash it, as durability and hygiene depend on not washing the kuksa. The kuksa absorbs any remaining moisture instantly after drinking, and with the dry, salty wood surface, bacteria cannot thrive. However, if you eat or drink something thicker from the kuksa, it's good to rinse it with warm water. If a thicker film forms, scrape it off with a knife.
Initially, use it frequently to form the grease coating on the surface. Then it will be ready for long trips and can withstand alcohol as well, tasting of what you drink rather than what was last in it.
(You can quickly alter the kuksa's flavor with a capful of your favorite spirit: add a capful to the kuksa and swish it around for a moment. The spirit absorbs into the kuksa, and a few cups of coffee will have a slight spirit flavor, but less so of salt and wood. A larger amount of spirit may penetrate the wood, and if the kuksa soaks, it could crack when it dries. This step is not necessary.)
