Hornady ELD-VT V-Match Series (Extremely Low Drag - Varmint | Target) cartridges for precision-shooting enthusiasts and hunters. The ELD-VT combines a precision cartridge with a destructive animal hunting bullet. This bullet is made lighter than traditional comparable precision bullets, allowing it to achieve higher velocities and a flatter trajectory compared to heavier projectiles. However, the bullet's design is far more aerodynamic than that of similarly weighted projectiles, enabling the ELD-VT to maintain speed longer and achieve a straighter trajectory, even over long distances.
The bullet’s lightweight is achieved by weighting the core towards the base while leaving air between the core and the bullet's Heat Shield tip. The tip penetrates at lower speeds, initiating the bullet's rapid expansion upon impact, which is significant when shooting small game, ideally limiting effects to one entry wound in the fur. The Heat Shield tip used in the bullets withstands aerodynamic heating even at extended flight times, ensuring that the bullet maintains its excellent ballistic coefficient even for long-range shots. Hornady has designed a versatile 6 mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) at the request of an agency under the U.S. Department of Defense for use in AR-15 type actions. The cartridge can be utilized in both bolt-action and semi-automatic firearms, delivering an extreme combination of system weight, functionality, and shootability.
The bullet tip design incorporates patented DVRT (Drag Variability Reduction Technology). The precise and correct design of the bullet tip helps minimize the dispersion caused by variations in drag, producing tighter groupings and less spread over long distances compared to differently shaped bullets.
